Before you choose an Anker USB-C hub

Use the Anker 555 as a concrete example: check your laptop’s video support, power budget, and what each socket actually does.

A hub is useful when its connections match your desk. Begin with a list: one monitor, a keyboard, an external drive, perhaps a network cable or memory card. Then check the laptop port that will host it. The Anker 555 USB-C Hub (8-in-1), model A8383, provides a practical example of why a port count by itself does not tell the whole story.

01Match the sockets to your actual peripherals

Anker lists one HDMI output, two USB-A data ports, one USB-C data port, a USB-C power input, Ethernet, and SD/microSD slots for the 555. Map each item on your desk to a socket. If the plan needs two HDMI monitors, this single-HDMI model does not supply that second connection; compare a dock whose stated display configuration matches the whole plan.

02Check the laptop’s video capability

The manual requires a host USB-C port with DisplayPort Alt Mode for HDMI video. It distinguishes up to 4K at 60Hz with a DP 1.4 host from 4K at 30Hz with DP 1.2. Check the laptop manufacturer’s documentation for the exact port, then check the monitor and HDMI cable. A USB-C connector that fits is not enough evidence that the video path will work.

03Allow for the hub’s own power needs

The 555 accepts up to 100W USB-C power input and provides up to 85W to the laptop, with 15W reserved for hub operation. Anker specifies a suitable 100W PD charger and cable for the full 85W pass-through mode. Compare that laptop-side allowance with your computer’s charging requirements; the input label is not the amount delivered to the computer.

04Read the USB-C labels carefully

The power-input socket and the USB-C data socket have different jobs. The former is for power input, while the latter is for data and does not provide video output or device charging. Plan to connect the display through HDMI. For fast external storage, check the complete connection path—including the drive and cable—before relying on the advertised data-port ceiling.

05Choose a hub or a larger dock around the setup

A compact hub may be enough for a desk that packs away each evening. A permanent multi-screen workspace deserves a separate look at docking stations, their host requirements, display combinations, and included power supplies. Write down the essential connections first, and remove any model that cannot meet them before comparing convenience features.
